Hi we are a family of five too and manage to fit everything in one large holdall. We got ours from instore/poundstretchers and it was about a fiver! If you have a local market it might be worth having a look? or tesco/sainsburys have some good holdalls for sale for under £10.

Never thought of using vacuum storage bags, Argos have some on offer at the moment . They take less space than a holdall or case. The blankets etc are vac'd right down as far as poss and clothes less so otherwise it takes the rest of the hol to get the creases out. The bags squash down pretty well without a vacuum for the return trip.

In previous years weve taken large holdals but they take up too much room for us.

This year everyone had an Aldi black reusable bag, seemed to work (husband always takes the most stuff and comes back with the most unworn!!!!)

I've just reserved 2 set of the jumbo bags from Argos for our BH trip and never thought to use our 12v air pump to suck out air for return, always thought it had to be the hoover.

I bought a large holdall from Tesco it was about £10 and holds stuff for 2 adults and 2 kids.

A trick I have recently tried which works well to is to pack clothes in black bags and vac them smaller either with ari pump or I do with Hoover at home and then pack in holdall. you save loads of space!!!!

My feeling is that its easier to pack one smaller bag for each person than one huge one for everyone. Easier to fit into the car, easier for finding each person's clothes once you're there.

that's one of the reasons went for Aldi bags (sound nubby doesn't it but worked for us) smaller than a holdall - bigger than a back pack and one each so no going through someone elses clothes to get to yours.

You can normally always find a small gap rather than finding a large one too when packing.

we used the old style chequered laundry bags. Got them off the market for about 50p each.

Dont know if you have one close to you but Sports direct had a large selection at good prices for the holdalls when we were there a couple of weeks ago, also online.
