Try the Motorola T4502

Small easy to use claims 5k range but actual 3k I’ve used these all over the world in very hot and very cold conditions not that expensive and uses 3x AAA bats with about 30 hour listening time.

(not waterproof)

Went for the Maplins walkie talkies in the end - they are actually Oregon Scientific.  Seem to look fairly robust in their splash-proof rubberised covers.  Have tried them out in the garden and around the house and they seem fairly clear.  Will see how they go "in the field" on hols next week.

Thanks for the advice from all...
