I was thinking on getting a bike rack for the roof but wondered how easy it was to actually lift the bikes up there do you need a ladder or something?

I've got 2 adult and 2 kids bikes so the lift would only work for 2 bikes.

I don't know how high an X trail is - I can load our Mondeo easily rnough but yes, you may well need some sort of step up or something to get up there - depends on how tall you are as well I guess.

Lifting the bikes is ok,

Well, as it happens I was parked in Sainsburys today next to an X trail. It wasn't esp. high, it looked like I (175 cm tall) would be able to load it ok. Possibly might need a little folding strp or somethign to reach the middle easier.

Assuming you cna lift the bikes up high enough that is - which depends a lot on the weight of the bikes.

I have an X Trail and we load kayaks onto it, it isn't easy and as I have now been diagnosed with a slipped disc it has sealed the fate for our large 3 man yak!  Do think long and hard, your health is worth more trust me!!  Lifting heavy weights that high above your normal reach is not good.

Ali,

What X Trail do you have is it the old style or new?

I got the new one but it also has those rails on the roof with the lights so it makes it even higher.

Old style Dave, don't have posh car money lol!  We have Nissan bars on it, it came with them in fact, but it really is quite high to heft a 28 kg yak onto the top of!

It'd be some bike to weigh 28 kg though.

My tourer weighs about 14kg - thats fine. My wifes bike, or the bike I use for towing the youngest kiddie is aout 17 - 18 kg, heavier, but ok

I weighed the bikes last night 2 adult 2 kids and bike rack for tow ball mounting came to 87.2kg!!!

Thats why i'm looking at the roof now as my tow ball nose weight is 100kg.

I looked at thule's site and the kit they say that fits my x trail defo wont fit when you look at the instruction on the site so i've taken pics and emailed them to see what they say would fit.

My main worry is the height and how to get them up there.

Dave

I can recommend roofbox.co.uk for advice (and purchse) :-) ).

As to getting them up there - well if you want to check it out, i'd put a something over the roof or a bord over the roofbars and see if I can lift the bikes up there ok. Like I said, comapring the height of an X trail in the car park to the Mondeo it looked ok.

At most I'd imagine a slittle step up might help reaching the ones in the middle.

I think it worth getting the better cycle carriers where you can clamp the bike easily with one hand from the bottom rather than the older type design like I have where yiu have fiddle a bout with a screw up clamp by the bike frame
