we are trying to decide whether to upgrade our fan heater to something that gives off more heat (we were still quite cold with it on full blast!) and wondered if anyone could suggest anything better! We have an 8 man tent with quite a large living area.
Thanks!

We have an 8 man tent and use one of those 3 bar halogen heaters that oscilate( sorry about the spelling!). that gives off a lovely heat and a really warm glow!!! plus its got a cut out switch if it gets knocked over! it was about £20 from our local camping shop but argos do one.
Hi Daisy, personally speaking, I'd stick with the fan heater. It's more a directed heat than a radiant heat you'd get from a halogen or radiator. It's very hard to warm a room with radiant heat when the flysheet doesn't insulate all that well. With the fan heater, it directs it at you to take the edge off, and with a specific camping heater like the outwell ones, they have the safety cutout built in. Even leaving it on all night can make a difference, and I don't find the noise intrusive, pretty much on a par with having a cooler running.
You didn't say what type of heater you use, but I'd recommend an Outwell M fan heater. Two heat settings, and a cold blow, can't quite remember the wattage of the two settings right now though. Wazz it on high for instant warmth in the evening, then knock it down to low during the night to keep the cold at bay.
These UCO candle lamps claim to heat a tent, and are offered as safe by the manufacturer (with due care). You have to use their own candles, specially formulated wax which I guess may be relevant to safety (carbon monoxide). No experience of these myself, I wonder if anyone else has?
The main thing to remember when trying to heat a tent is that most that is generated will go straight through the fabric and be wasted. When we tented the only thing that really worked in keeping warm was more clothes or a good cuddle.
Thanks everyone! I think I will stick to the fan heater or upgrade it for a better one.
I think a trip to G.O. is on the cards - the only trouble is that I always seem to end up buying more stuff I really don't need. I dare not even go look at the tents!
