we are going to Cornwall in September, i want to take the bikes ( 2x adult) so we cycle the Camel Trail; should we take them apart and put in the car or buy a carrier
OH is a dab hand at putting bikes together so no worries on that side
car is only a 1 litre vw polo, but we are only taking a few items and clothes as we are staying in a yurt
Put them on a carrier. I've done both with a Citroen C4, and can honestly say that taking the front wheel off and shoving the bikes in the car with the rear seat folded is a right pain. To get them to fit comfortably would mean removing pedals as well, then it's all starting to be a bit of a faff. Simple carrier on the hatchback or on the roof is so much easier and quicker, and will make life simpler when you're there - you can leave the bikes on the carrier and lock them up using a long cable lock - nice and easy.
Yeah I'd second that, bike are suprisingly awkward things to fit into a car - handlebars, cranks, pedals, etc. all get in the way and is much more likely to lead to damage.
If you want to think possibly do it then do a trial run first to see if it works for you and is worth it.
I'd go for a couple of rood mounted carriers on roofbars as my first option in this case.
might borrow a friends carrier to see if it works on the Polo, OH worries his precious claude butler will get bumped, scratched, dirty, you know what i mean
if we take them apart, he can then spend some of his weeks holiday tinkering with the bikes, he would be in his element though
thanks for that, muddy bikes in the car, would go with the bits of trees, logs, etc that OH insists on using his chainsaw on, for open fire at home, lol
seriously he does have to clean it up a lot so there would be no change, and i cant see him letinh the precious bike stay muddy for moe than a few hours at a time, lol
but i am going to halfords later, talk to them about options, hopefully get some ideas
