The larger the mass of the frozen object the more energy it will require to be melted.

Go for the empty 2 litre plastic bottles (or larger) and fill them to 90% full with water. Should easily last 4-5 days (depending on the ambient temperature and how often you access the cooler). I generally swap one or two each night from a freezer to retain the temperature in the compartment.

Don't forget to start chilling the cool box day(s) before you go.
I have some 5 litre bottles of water in the freezer waiting for the 'cool down'

I was thinking of getting the 9qt size to keep drinks cool in the car while I'm working. do you think, say, 3 bottles of water would stay cool from 8 till 5 in a car on a hot day with one of these?
