is there a difference between candles that say " citronela " and ones that say " citronella and insect repelling" or are they the same thing????

Citronella is an insect repellent.

When I've bought those bucket citronella candles they've usually ended up full of insects swimming in molten wax. The smell may put them off, but the light from the flame seems to attract them like a magnet.

i wpuld buy just citronella candles, the little blighters bite me to death, the midges not candles !!! i fing that i ban perfume and aftershave and shower in source lemon shower gell and they leave me alone. Its the perfume on our bodies that the midges are attracted to.It even works abroad with the mozzys.

We use Citronella Oil dripped around the place. Also, use a Hurricane Lamp with Citronella added to the paraffin.

Works well for the most part!

Also experimenting with Lavender Oil which appears to keep the Wasps to a minimum!

Sorry, no pics. It is just a cheap £2.99 Chinese hurricane lamp. Can be bought from many budget High Street shops & sometimes in B&Q  or Ironmongers etc.

Lavender  & Citronella Oil is available at most chemists & Health Food Shops.

Prices vary considerably though!

Best advice for wasps around your pitch is to make sure ALL food & food smells are eliminated!

i've gone for citronella joss sticks rather than candles on the basis that smoke is usually a good insect deterrent and there's no flame to attract anything. haven't actually used them yet though, so can't report on effectiveness, but the reviews for the site we're going over the bank holiday say that insects are a problem there, so will report back.

I've dotted small cotton wool pads with some citroenella oil on them, around the tent and it did seem to help a bit.......
