We've bought ourselves a 2nd hand portable satellite system from a well known auction site. It has not come with the sat finding compass/display thingy, do we need this to enable us to set our dish/receiver up as we seem to be having a few teething problems, and not sure if this is the reason why or if there is another reason.
In theory you don't but in practice it is so much easier. Still not easy for the novice though. I assume you are after free to air channels. Positioning is very precise. Works well when you have found it. Have you got instructions?
I am sure you will find a satellite finder on that same auction site beginning with an E.
Gave up on my system. Freeview is easier UK and if you go to abroad you need a BIG dish if going south
Thanks for the advice. Think I'll order one of those thingybobs. Freeview reception where we live is rubbish so cannot test it properly here (we have this built in on the tv we bought). As for the manual, it looks as good as a chocolate teapot as does the tv manual. Normally I am quite good with manuals (& my OH can usually sussed how things go without one! - one of those type of people). But this time we are stumped . Perhaps I'll wait to get the little finder before we attempt to try again.
I also recommend this site http://www.satelliteforcaravans.co.uk/
I can't remember if they also mention the angle of the LNB when clamped to the dish arm. his is critical to getting the good signal quality. It needs to be about 11 degrees from vertical. The compass setting and angle of launch are found from this WEB site depending on your site location. Once you get the hand of it you will set up in less than 15 mins.

ps make sure of a clear site away from trees etc in the direction of the dish.
