on our last caravan there wasn't a window to check if it was lit, instead we had an indicator which turned to green when it was lit or stayed red if not lit or moved back to red when the gas ran out. We used to rally alot without hookup so wonder if it took a bit of power from the battery???

The easiest way to check if the gas has in fact ignited is to put your hand by the flue outlet on the outside of the van, you will feel the heat from the burner coming out if it is lit. No need to wait to see if it gets cold.

i read the manual. but it wasnt clear when i tried to follow instructions i couldnt tell if it was on i dont like the thought of gas running and not being lit. i couldnt see a light so turned it off and wouldnt take a chance.
i thought some one on here would have the same model as me. if not i will find out when we take it for our service.
thank you andy for the link to the manual its as clear as mud. i had a manual when we bought it but i didnt find it easy to understand or follow

There is a thermocouple on the burner, if the flame goes out the thermocouple goes cold & turns the gas off. The gas cannot continue to flow if the flame does not light.
- Ignition takes place automatically. You will hear a ticking noise. If ignition was
successful, the noise will stop and the flame meter will turn green. Release the
thermostat.
- If the flame goes out, ignition will be repeated automatically.
- Set the desired refrigeration level by means of the thermostat (B). (The bigger
the dot, the colder the setting)
Seems straightforward
Mike
thank you for this i didnt notice that the light should change to green but it is a while since i tried it.
thank you for your help i will rellook and try again.
it was a new van to us last year . i thought i had turned the electric on and put my food in the fridge including ice cream in the freezer then noticed i had not set it correctly in my panic i decided to try the gas to cool it quickly but didnt find it very clear so i turned if back on to electric.this tool a while then to cool down . we put thus gas on if stopped on ferry terminals or sometimes the day before we go away at our storage place to cool the fridge before travelling.

Thanks Ruita, wont be long before we know, never been let down here before.
Please if you use this newer type fridge tell us. Is the fridge lit indicator mechanical or a light/LED. If it is a light is this 12volt? (i assume that as you wouldn't bother with gas if you got mains).
If it is a 12volt controller and the battery dies will the fridge continue cooling on gas?
I believe it's a mechanical flow-meter. Certainly is on my monster. The flow of gas to the "burner" is sufficient to drive a needle indicator which sits in a green indicated area, rather than at the default "off" position". As the gas flow drops due to lack of pressure, the needle then sinks through an amber coloured zone, though I'm sure I could find better things to do with my time than watch a needle moving (or not!).
Nora, if it is a fairly new model thretford fridge it's probably like ours. We use ours on gas at rallies every weekend.
Check you have got the gas tap on the gas pipe to the fridge switched on ie in line with the pipe. Then press the little ON switch on the control panel. Then select the flame symbol from the button on the left side of the panel. If you are very quiet you can just about hear it doing some quiet clicking as the gas automatically lights. It may take a little while if it has not been on gas before. All is then silent. Put the temp contol on the right button on full, and leave for 5 mins. Test by putting hand in ice box. Should feel cold.
If, for whatever reason, it has not lit, no gas will escape as it automatically will not come through.
Sometimes fridges will be reluctant to work properly if they are not level and are on a slope.
thanks saftlad, you can understand my confusion as an engineer if some one says a green light i assume they mean a bulb or LED. thats why i asked if it was mechanical, thanks for the reply it is all clear for me now.
