If you use the internet infrequently when away isn't it just easier to get free Wi-Fi somewhere as loads of places have it now?? That is what we are going to do in France. I did think about the dongel but then if you are abroad it is my understanding it is very expensive if it is a UK one......couold buy a French one of course.
After some of the comments on here I was getting worried that my 1g dongle was going to have to be topped up every month. As I only use it in the caravan it would have turned out rather expensive. I have checked the vodaphone website and it seems everything is ok if you have the old version 1g with no expiry date you can check it here. Sorry do not know how to do links.
I have an Orange dongle that I pay £5 per month for and get 512mb. I can add an extra 1gb for an additional £5 in those months I need it. 512mb will be sufficient for most months of the year when I am away in the van. It will only be our 2 week holiday that I will potentially need to top it up with another 1gb. I think it may only be available for those with an Orange phone. I chose Orange as it has by far the best 3G coverage in the UK.

I am looking into PAYG mobile broadband for when we are away, and when I asked in the mobile phone section of a Tesco Extra they recommended 3.
Would agree with Tesco.I have been to far flung areas of this country and to date not had difficulty getting reception...but theres always a first i suppose.

We can use our phones as a connection via a usb cable with no extra charge to us but some may charge
My OH was charged about a £5 month last year to do it on his when he was away with work and cancled it when his time away was cancled. We got a new contract since then and it is included.
Contact your service provider and see if you can do it with your phone?
