HI, we are thinking about taking our 1 year old baby camping in the UK for the first time later this year. We are worried about her getting cold during the night!
Please could anyone offer any advice on camoing with a baby? Can you get proper sleeping bags for babies when camping? is it safe to plug in an electric fan heater if it is damp outside? brigitte.
Also...the TT is only 2 berth...will baby be ok in travel cot in theawning part??
Hi, I camped with all my kids as little ones and they loved it. You can buy baby sleeping bags, click HERE to see one. I used fleecy PJ's and bedsocks for my kids, and some extra blankets. Put some picnic rugs under your airbed, and something ontop of the airbed but under your sleeping bags as it help keep the chill off. (If your worried your baby will be cold, put baby in your bed and keep a check on the temp) You can plug in a fan heater, as long as you have a proper hookup cable/rcd I leave mine on at night if its chilly. All in all even if my kids got cold they LOVED camping and I soon learnt the best way to keep it cosy in the tent

We camped with my lot from about the same age. A small oil storage heater is a much better bet than a fan heater. First the fan heater might be noisy and secondly if anything falls on it they can overheat etc. Yes, some do have cut-outs, but they still get too hot. Ours also slept in a travel cot in the awning. Lots of blankets below too. Have you seen those sleeping bags that the child wears like a bodywarmer? They are almost imossible for them to wriggle out of.
We took our 2 last year - Elouise was 16 months and Talia was a newborn. Both were fine. Elouise had a ready bed with blankets on top, slept next to me and Talia had a growbag and blankets on top. They both slept in with us so I could add/remove blankets each time I woke and checked their temp.
This year Talia will have just turned 1 and trying to decide what to do as we won't fit a travel cot in the bedroom but would probably all fit in one room on blow up beds. Might get her a my first ready bed.
hi the little one will be fine, my youngest was 1 last year when we took her we also took another couple with us as we have a large tent , so there were 4 adults and a 1 year old , a 2.year old and 2 6 yr olds , it was that fantastic august bank holiday that was a absolute wash out ,and most peple were leaving the site in ullswater, it was also cold and windy , butt all kids were fine , our 2 were on a double air bed with 2 quilts and a fleece blanket , also the air beds were on them tin foil survival blankets and foil backed picnic blankets to insultate the beds ,and if anything they were abit warm ,but dispite the S### wheather we had a good time and the kids loved it.
p.s it was that bad that people were leaving tents and alsorts that weekend

went camping last year with 4 kids youngest 1 oldest 7, all wore longsleeve vests, fleecey pjs, socks and fleecey all in one suits, they were fine n being fidgets they stayed cosy even after wriggling out of sleeping bags!

HI we're going camping with our 9 month old this year, she'll be one, looked at baby sleeping bags but have just ordered her a junior gelert pod - because baby sleeping bags looked quite restrictive. I'm going to fold the extra length of the pod under her. It hasn't arrived yet but will let you know when it has, also going to use fleece all in one and sleepsuit and get a good electric heater!
Just worried shes going to wake the whole campsite up in the middle of the night if shes teething, was up 3 times last night!
You really don't need to worry about keeping them warm, it's really not that hard. For younger ones (say up to 2 yo?) we used multiple layers - with a nice fleecy suit on over the top, in a Babygro type sleeping bag (the type with arm holes - not a camping type). With blankets if neccessary, but not normally.
Sleeping on what ever campoing mats we were using (we did ahve a Ready bed with elsest, but didn't bother for youngest. Though at 1 they would normally end up snuggled up next to mum anyway.

Relax and enjoy, we have three kids and the youngest has been camping since she was a new born. We just take the travel cot, babygro bag thing that they sleep in, We have never had any heating, just play it by ear.

A TT awning is a bit cold for a baby. It's considerably colder than the cabin. Either sort out a way for her to sleep upstairs in the TT well or one of you will have to sleep in the awning and the baby sleep with the other parent. We tried having the baby in the awning once and once only after we first got the TT and the poor little soul was chilled to death. After that my OH slept in the awning and our two kids came in with me. OH wasn't too chuffed about it but I pointed out that if he thought it was cold in the awning, how was the baby feeling?
We changed to a 4-6 berth TT very soon after that.
Valk - yes good point - i was thiniing more about the little un being in the tent with others. SAtuck out there by itself it could be rather cold. I'd have them in the cabin with an adult as well I think
We were wondering what to do with our little on this year as he wriggles out of anything at night. I have got one of the Vango baby bags and am going to stitch shoulder straps on it like the grobags. Should work well I think.
