Nearly got everything now and the countdown to our maiden camping voyage is in the 40's....

Have been looking for a compact portable bbq now for a while...

specs are:

adjustable grill height

easy to pack away/compact

freestanding

charcoal

This seems to fit the bill, but would feel better if I could find one in the 'flesh' to have a look at.....

Anyone tried this one, or got any recommendations?

Thanks for the replies everyone. Decided to go the B&Q route and ordered one of these

As Stew says they are on offer at the moment if anyone is in the same boat as me

I started to look for a BBQ last summer, but everyone had sold out of the sort I wanted.  (see: http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=6&TopicID=213307&PagePosition=3)

It has now come down to two choices, both mentioned in this thread: The 'Italian case type' found on ebay at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290422432893&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&siteid=3&campid=5339172918&customid=&toolid=10001&mkevt=1, and the B & Q Vegas, blue one, found at http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=10787671&fh_view_size=10&fh_start_index=10&fh_eds=%3f&fh_location=%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB%2fcategories%3c%7b9372012%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b9372023%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b9211019%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b9392021%7d%2fspecificationsProductType%3dcharcoal_barbecues&fh_refview=lister&ts=1271370854917&isSearch=false.

The ebay item is more compact (i.e. the legs fit in the case), but is smaller then the B & Q BBQ.  It is also more expensive than the B & Q one.  On the other hand the B & Q BBQ is less compact, mainly because the legs are always attached to the base of the charcoal pan - it comes in quite a big box.  The B & Q BBQ also has two or three scews/nuts protruding into the coals pan.  If (like us) you line the bottom of the pan with foil before adding the coals (ideal for clearing up afterwards) you would need to be careful that the protuding screws/nuts do not puncture the foil lining.

In the end, we went for the B & Q BBQ because of the more generous cooking area.  For those with less room, it would seriously be worth looking at the ebay item.

This is our, very old BBQ, in action in the rain. Everything fits inside the base, legs and all.

Do you have to read stories to it, or is that optional?

Yes. While waiting for the charcoal to stop smoking.

Could be worse, it could have been a recipe book!!!
