The phone line is only mandatory, if you have more than one Sky box running in your house, with a mirror subscription, if you just have a single box, then you can unplug the phone line, with no comeback, fact is the phone line is only of use to you for booking Box Office Movies etc, and interactive services, also Sky get info from the phone connectoin about your viewing habbits., if you have Sky MultiRoom then the phone line is mandatory, but even then you can take your Box away on holiday, although when you get back, you may find a letter has come from Sky advising that you are in breach of the T&C's, if that happens you just re-connect the box to the phone line and give Sky a call, advising them that the Box was accidentaly disconnected from the phone line, Sky will then Poll the Box to confirm your story, and that will be the end of that.
You can add Ch5, via the add channels menu, if you don't have a card for your Sky box, or if the card is no longer working. hope that helps.
cheers francais will try that next time. We used to get ch5 before we started to get message saying we would have to renew our card shortly when box was first switched on. Also never been able to retune to get local news ch.still only get Yorkshire whether we are in Scotland or Cornwall probley should just pay sky the £25 and get the new card I just hate the thought of giving sky anymore cash lol

I belive you have to have a single sky box connected to phone line for first year then you can unplug the line.
ah will try this weekend then and let you know if it works. We have the single box at home and have had it for over a year so will be off to buy a dish today or tomorrow. If this fails then we will be buying a separate receiver too!
We have SKY multi room and don't have the phone line plugged in; the wire was trailing all over the place and eventually the adaptor broke so we just unplugged it. Everything still works fine, apart from the Box Office/Interactive services. SKY have never said anything to us. If they did I'd ask them if they still our wanted our £65 monthly subscription...
I can asure you that you will get a letter from Sky in the very near future, with 10million subscribers and an ARPU of over £500 per anum, from folk like you, they can afford to loose your custom, one of the reasons for the phone line is so that you don't rent your second box out to your mate down the road for £35 per month, personally I would never subsribe to Sky, and never have, although I did have a free full subscription for ten years which was nice of them, although I have Sky+ and 4 other active Sky box's around the house, I only pay for the FTV card, a one of payment of £25 x 4 once every 3 years, and I begrudge paying that!.
Wongers.
The retailers tell you that you need the phone line connected, as they get a nice kick back from each connection, fact is the phone line is only mandatory for MultiRoom (second box), the sales people that push Sky in the shopping centres make a point of telling punters this, as many of thier clientle do not have landlines, problem for Sky is that they can't get those folk on MultiRoom, as Sky has strangled itself with it's own rules, although Sky are working on the next generation of box's which work on a kinda GPS and mobile connection embedded in the box, although the problem with that is that Sky would loose revenue from ex-pats who subscribe, but of course don't exist, as Sky on has film/show rights to screen to a UK audience.
