This is our first season camping under canvas (nylon really ;) ) we have bought a high double inflatable matress from Aldi, tried it at New Year and I'm not sure about it, wasn't keen on the flock covering even with a cotton sheet on - dh just thinks it needed more air. Anyone tried one of the aldi beds?
We planned to just bring our quilt and sheets, I'm really not keen on sleeping bags - but will that be alright or are we likely to be too cold? The children have sleeping bags but they are 'cheap' ones and I've been reading that we should really invest in some better ones.
Using just a sheet on top of an airbed will not be warm enough .the cold from the ground will come straight through the airbed. put a picnic rug (the plastic or foil backed ones from aldi or lidl are very good , or a fleece blanket on top of airbed under the sheet.
better still use another duvet instead of a sheet and then a duvet over you if you really dont want to use sleeping bags. this way , you'll have the sleeping bag effect, warmth under as well as on top , without the constriction. a single duvet covers a double bed just about perfect.
You could buy or make fleece liners to go inside the kids sleeping bags and take extra blankets to go over them. Or wrapping a fleece blanket around them before they get in the sleeping bag helps too, again ,use a picnic rug or fleece blanket under the sleeping bag on whatever beds they have.
Fleece blankets are really cheap in ikea or primark, from about £3 each, so get plenty , better to have too much bedding than not enough.
Take hot water bottles . very comforting on cold damp nights, and nice to have behind you in your chair, while sitting out before you go to bed too.
We sleep in the awning of our caravan as I still like the feeling of being under canvas. We have an Intex Queen double height airbed with a rubber backed carpet underneath then on top is a duvet, double thickness mattress cover, jersey sheet, and to cover us we use a 13.5tog duvet (which I have extended to touch the floor so we always stay covered when one rolls over), two double fleece blankets and then a double sleeping bag opened right out to make an extra blanket. If and when the weather ever gets warmer we can take off a layer at a time, but in the meantime I really like to be cosy - but I expect you've already guessed that.
I remember sleeping on our aerobed new years at a friends house
Really comfy but bl**dy freezing. We assumed as we were indoors and the heating on a sheet and our quilt to cover us up was enough,WRONG about 2am the airbed turns into a giant icec-ube you really need to insulate under your body
Great tips on here fleece's,quilts to lay on. Goodluck with what you decide. Are beds can be precarious with softness, leaks etc at least be snug if another fault is going to arise.
Good Luck with what you decide

Karla-------Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
Thanks for the great advice, think I'll definately go for the quilt under and over tip and I might actually have a go on the bed again before we go - would hate to spoil our first real camping trip because I can't sleep in it.
Forgot to mention on previous post that we also have decking under the carpet in the awning so really ott with the insulation but we have been toasty warm even when it is so cold you can see your breath.
