Hi there,

My hubby and I are totally new to camping and are just getting all out equipment together for a few camping trips later in the year. We have brought a campingaz camping chef today for a very reasonable price £31 from yeomans. However the assistant was not all that helpful with regard to the gas, could anyone help? What cylinder would you recommend and do i need an adaptor?

Many Thanks

Kelly

Long story, short;

Calor gas 4.5kg butane (blue bottle like this) plus suitable regulator from here.

You'll have to pay an initial deposit on the gas cylinder of £30 unless you can find an empty bottle somewhere else (eBay, local refuse tip, etc). The empty doesn't have to be the same size - just the same brand (Calor).
The gas itself should be ~£14.

Bear in mind if you do do that, they're not supposed to let you take anything away. Often a fiver slipped into their social fund on the sly is the best way of getting a result.
Assuming they have any cylinders in, of course.

Failing that, have a look on Gumtree and Freecycle for your area.

Lastly, try eBay and search for items near you. You may even get a cylinder with some gas left in it.

Are you planning on camping abroad at all?
The reason I ask is that Calor isn't available abroad, so you need to make sure you aren't going to run out when you're away, or you switch to Campingaz gas when you're abroad, which you can get refills for on the continent.

We used a 4.5kg calor butane. We love our campingaz camping chef. We were new to camping last year and ran around like mad things to kit ourselves out in a week!

Your welcome

when you have finished buying everything you need and dont need but must have, we can recommend trailers and roofboxes for you, then when you have all that extra room we can spend some more of your money for you on a bigger tent
