I know this thread is a few months old, but has anyone tried one of those cage mesh kits to extend height of trailer sides? If so, how do they attach please? I would need to remove it for storage if the trailer. Thanks guys!
Looking at extending my erde 122 to approx double height, think 12mm ply for success and lid, which could be lockable
Also thinking galvanized angle in each corner to attach to trailer, but would like to keep option of opening the rear, any ideas how this could be fine and would 12mm ply be ok
Thanks
Hi there, we eventually had one made for ours , it looks a bit like a rabbit run that you put on grass? 2 x 1inch frame all around, with a liftable gate at back. Covered with mesh so lightweight. Ours is open at the top but we bought a high side cover and once it's on its all very secure. Don't know much about ply for sides though, sorry. Hope you succeed anyway.😊

Use alloy angle instead of galvanised angle to keep weight to a minimum, although if using ply for sides it would be far simpler to use 2x1 for corners as screw construction is easier. All wood is the way to go even going down to 6mm ply for lightness. Paint will give all the weatherproofing needed especially if corners are sealed with silicone.
I extended the sides on my trailer with plywood and sealed the painted ply to the trailer with mastic. I made a lid from plywood and fixed it using padlocks. It was good as most of our camping gear simply stayed in the trailer all the time. No loading or unloading required at home. (we now have a caravan so the trailer is used for trips to B&Q and such)
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.
Thanks for all the info posted here, although from 2019 still highly relevant. I have borrowed a trailer from a neighbour and wanted to increase capacity without drilling into it etc. I was given permission to put sides on under those conditions. So I wanted a flat pack solution.
The trailer is a nova portaflot 3ft by 4ft, or when I measured 1010mm * 1350mm.
I have used 2x4 stilts for the corners, 2*1 support for the ply, and some additional wood to screw into, to stop the ply bending. I have used some catches to make the backdoor removable and some 5mm sealent to go on the edge of the 5mm ply, which I painted with oil paint, but primed with the oil paint 50% with terps.
Additionally this design allows unbolting to store, so I have used anti vibration washers. Some stragetically placed reflecters to cover holes I made in error too!
Honestly would not have had the confidence to do this, without reading this thread. The frame is solid when together as the 4 sides push each other. It's also bolted down through some pre existing holes in the trailer to stop it bouncing on bumps etc.
Some photos of the design and then making for your viewing pleasure, sorry if boring haha.
