Make sure you talk to your neighbours! They will then know who belongs to the tent. You will know who is in their tent too! Like everyone else we put the valuable stuff out of sight in the car and shut the tent up.
This of course is very good advice, that I really should follow! The first time we went camping I left the digital camera sat on the table outside the tent! When we got back I quickly picked it up, shoved it in my bag and never owned up to the hubby!
We have been camping for a while now adn have never had anything taken xx

The nearest we ever came to having a problem was many years ago with a trailer tent. We were just arriving back after a day out only to catch a very small boy coming out of the trailer tent. In the end it worked out that this young lad had come from a very similar trailer tent elsewhere on the site. He had got lost and thought it was his tent. Generally there are few problems. Even thieves know that most people take their valuables with them, so it is hardly worth their while.
I leave a radio on. If the car has gone people don't know if you have all gone out. Yes I also talk to neighbours so they know who should be going in and out of the outfit

A quick and easy way to lock a zip is to put a small knob pin inbetween the teeth of it untill the knob is almost flush. This renders the zip stuck fast until the pin is removed, but if you do ut close to the closing tab, no one can see its there, and whilst they are fiddling around with it, they stand more chance of being spotted up to no good and are more likely to leave yours alone and move onto the next one.
If they are really determined enough to get inside though, they will simply slash the canvas with a stanley knife or similar.

I take the valubles with us in the car, put anything small and attractive to casual intruders out of sight (alcohol is best not left outside!) and zip the tent down fully before going out. No lock. I can't belive how many folk go out and leave a door open though. Why is this?
I once went out and left the zip open. I was on my own with the kids for the first time other than the weekend we were testing the tent at a local site, I had got the kids into the cat, fastened into their seats, as thye still needed help, got into the car, then realised I had forgotten something, so went back for it. My lovely neightbours spotted the tent open, and checked that everything was ok, and zipped it for me. They explained what had happened. They knew I was on my own with two young children spotted the car gone, and tent open. As others have said, campers look out for one another.
Like others valuables stay in the car when were not "in". The rest stays in the tent/camper, Never had anything go missing. Had a very apoligetic mum come up to me and say her boys had been playing on one of our scooters - which I said was OK because I told them they could. It was the family's first time camping had they hadn't thought about bikes/scooters.
I've never hear of anyone having anything taken when camping, most people keep any eye out anyway, people watching is my hobby whilst sitting outside with glass of vino
Sticking a padlock on your tent is a good way of saying I have something of value inside - ergo more likely to got into. Never had any problems myself. Just zip up and leave it taking anything of value with you. Took the OH a few days to get used to just leaving the tent, but now we think nothing of it.
I have never locked my tent either, the people on the site's have always watched each others and on most of the sites their is always someone watching out for something or someone and their are lots of nice people on the site as well,
