hello i bought a 2nd hand thetford 245 cassette toilet ,but i think theres a problem ,on the front theres a handle that you pull ,this in turn opens a flap ,the waste goes into the bottom tank, the problem i have is when i open the flap it wont stay open it just flies shut ,is it supposed to do that ,i mean is the flap supposed to be shut when you use the toilet ,open and flush when you finish,???,or is the flap supposed to be open when in use,, flush then shut..if this is the case then the only way of useing this toilet would be to physically hold the handel to keep the flap open ,any advice greatly welcome

You leave the flap shut when you use the toilet (see other threads for advice re lining the bowl to avoid skid marks!), flush and open flap to "dispose".

Sounds like what you've got is fine...

We do the opposite, flap open in use, no problem. If closed in use you need to be VERY careful when you open it afterwards.....try it with some clean water first and see what happens!

To answer the OP's question......

The flap should stay open when you open it.

Whether you use it with it open or closed is up to you.

Edit: the 245 is a Porta Potti model, so may operate differently. We had one in our first van back in the 70s, but I don't remember if it sprung closed again if not held open, but the user instructions do not mention this point specifically.

Careful of what

Maybe it depends on design...no issues with using our Thetford and dropping the contents after use

mmmmm, maybe me i just thought it logical to keep the flap open ,whatevers done falls straight into the waste tank ,no waste hanging around creating [ahem] smells ,give it a flush and close flap

...but by leaving the flap open you get all the smells from the waste tank anyway. More likely to get splashback on yer bum if you drop something straight into the open tank I'd have thought!

I've always left the flap open during use, although we once had (a long time ago now) a pedal operated flap on an old thetford (no idea which model) which was spring loaded, but you could hold it open with your foot whilst seated (don't think this was operationally intended though).
I think you can use them either way, it's up to ypu. & although splash-back is a possibility it's unlikely.
I'm only guessing here, but after the old foot pedal model we used to have, I wouldn't be surprised to find some of them have a spring loaded flap???

We had a C200 in our previous van and have the C250 in our present van, on both the flap tends to open quickly and cause "splash-up" if there are and liquids lying on top of it. Hence the need to open it slowly and carefully.

Much easier to open it first as far as we are concerned.

I flush a little water from the clean tank into the bowl, use the loo and then flush again and open to drop.  Makes it feel like a real flush toilet, IMHO.  Like anything, I say go with what you prefer, but ours snaps shut automatically too.  Just the way it's designed.
