Once you've made your mind up over the fitting, the shade, the fuse, etc, etc, don't forget to think about the height of where you're wanting to hang it from and make sure you have a length of flex that will reach from the hanging point to the ground or whereever your socket is. Instead of worrying about bumpng your head on the light fitting you may well be bumping your head on the plug and end of the extension lead which is suspended half way down from the middle of your tent. (Voice of experience!).
We use this sort of thing which we got from Poundland and use with a low energy bulb:
Unfortunately the Poundland one came with only 2m of cable. A slightly more expensive one (£3!) from Poundstretcher came with 3m of cable which made all the difference.

The plug end of this is ideal for cutting off and adding a rocker switch and another meter or so of cable and a plug.
wilkinsons , peice of cable for lighting,£2, plug 75p. bulb fitting adapter90p lampshaude £2.50 all from wilkies,this can then hang from the ceiling of youir tent and we use a 15watt low bulb and this is ample lighting
I really like the idea of rigging up my own one as many of you guys have done ... I'm just a bit concerned about the damp/condensation/waterproofing aspect, certainly for the porch. Do none of you ever have a problem with this?
