This may be a stupid question, but can I use roof bars to carry a suitcase on top of the car? Obviously with lots of strapping, bungies etc? We needs extra space but can't afford and don't have space to store a roof box. Could I just get some roof bars and securely strap a suitcase on to them? I'm sure this is what people used to do before roof boxes were so widespread but I'm not sure if I've seen anyone doing it recently so I'm worried!
You could always just bolt a piece of chip board to the roof bars to give you a platform to place your stuff on, cover with a waterproof tarp and bungee/strap the whole lot until it was secure.
of course you can. I am going away on saturday and the roofbox is going onto the trailer. I then have 2 bikes on carriers on the roof bars on the car. and in between them I have the windbreaks and then the tent bag on top of that. Just keep the wight low. With mine the tent pole bag is going in the car or trailer as it's far too heavy.
As they say, Stack it and rack

Great, thanks. That's what we'll do then. Big suitcase (with light stuff in) and buggy on top of the car. Will mean we may actually be able to fit the tent and child inside the car!
..by that do you mean ladder bars(that run from side to side)?
..because if you haven't already got anything, roof bar wise,it would probably be better to look at getting a simple "old stylie" roof rack..as you "stuff could be made more secure...
