As far as I remember you place the mantle round the bit you light. Light it and it should turn into a white fireball. Then the next time you just turn on the gas as normal and light the mantle again. You dont need a new mantle each time you light it though. I've had the same mantles in my two for 3 seasons now.
Another little tip - we bought one of those lighter thingys that has the free fuel attached in poundland. Its for lighting barbeques etc and its absolutely perfect for lighting our lanterns without losing the hair on the back of our hands.
