Last week I damaged both mantles on my Coleman 295 Powerhouse lantern. The mantles were the originals as supplied in the box, and had given over a year's service with no problems.
I replaced them with Coleman-Campingaz Insta-clip mantles (told by camping shop that these were the correct one's #21.
I fitted them easily, burnt them off no problem. When I lit them properly, one just blew right open.
After fitting the remaining spare, they are working, but they look VERY thin in places after only 20 min use!!!
Has anyone else found replacement Coleman mantles to be poor quality? Can anyone reccomend a good supplier of replacement mantles?
We have the Camping Gaz Insta-clip mantles on our Camping Gaz Stelia thingy gas lantern. The mantles were extremely easy to install, burnt fine, and have been brilliant ever since ! I love this lantern !
Yes.
I posted a query re the mantles on my Northstar. I have gone through loads and am sick of buying them. The lantern is lovely when working. I replaced the mantle again, well OH did and this time is looks so much better. OH lit it to burn it off rather than faff with a match and we couldn't believe how much better this was. Not the way it was supposed to be done but it worked for us!
I got spare mantles from base camp for my 295 - I called base camp for a chat and they were most helpful - not fitted the spares yet, been very lucky yo keep the as supplied ones going for years
We have the Northstar and what a quality product and had a full season on two mantle's and was used thirty times each for about four hours. Was I lucky.............
------------- Always make the effort, life is too short.
I agree that Coleman lanterns are excellent, and I have read that the North Star is as good as they get. It seems such a shame that the replacement mantles are soooo poor.
Maybe I was unlucky and bought dud replacements, but now Coleman has teamed up with Campingaz I would hate this to be the norm. I have sourced some tie-on #21 mantles from ebay and the packaging looks like the ones in the original box, so I look forward to trying them out.
The state of the insta-clip one's after only 20 mins use is terrible, slight holes near the clip and there are patches all over that look extremely thin!
I hate to say it, but I'm glad I'm not on my own with this problem :)
It's a conspiracy!
Coleman have cornered the market in substandard mantles.
By reducing the quality they are saving almost 0.00000001p per pack.
Or maybe you just clumsily knocked a hole in what is effectively a bag of ash....
We live in an expensive country...comparisons with the US are not really appropriate....fuel in the US is £1.50 a gallon vs over £6 here.... A 5 litre Dodge Ram is £20,000... With no punitive tax.
Mantles are a discretionary purchase...if you think they cost too much, don't buy them!
Try telling Shell that their petrol is expensive.....or maybe pop over the pond to fill up
