I bought a little gismo which fits onto the top of the cooker and just takes the chill off. That and a hot water bottle + good warm sleeping bag seems to do me fine! Hoever, I'm not in a tent but in a micro caravan.
An alternative is to put a heat difuser over a low flame on the cooker. Then there is no naked flame. There are also several little gas portable heaters on ebay and amazon.
The best thing for a tent though, IMHO, is an EHU lead and a mini oil-filled radiator, which you can leave on all night on a low setting! Especially in October when the night temps are getting very low.
B&Ms are doing the gas heaters that run off canisters for £15 at the moment. Identical to the ones that normally cost about £25.
I got one last month and have used it for two weekends so far. Used it for a short spell in the mornings to take the chill off and then a couple of longer periods in the evenings and used roughly one canister per day.
They don't kick out as much heat as a fan heater but they're enough to make my Nevada M nice and cosy. You need to make sure the tent is well ventilated though...

We have used a parabolic heater that screws onto our 907 bottle for years. Never ever leave it unattended or leave it on overnight. 2kw of heat takes the chill off a treat. We do, however, have a canvas non sig tent so plenty of ventilation
Ooooh, you are brave...bet I know where you are going too.
Has to be EHU for us as I wouldn't trust gas in the tent. But our first ever camping trip was in April w/o EHU and it was a case of lots of layers on us and the beds.
------------- If you see a family struggling to put up the tent then it must be us!
You also have to be careful with electric in a tent. I once had an oil filled radiator almost catch fire at home. Dread to think about that in a tent, especially as some people leave electric heaters on all night. Use a fan heater when using EHU but wouldn't leave it running while asleep in a tent.

I used a Black cat heater over the weekend. Definately recommend it, was excellent - takes the edge off the cold.
Snap, we got this for a xmas pressie and used it this week and it was fab, mostly on low with tent canopy open, kept the chill off and warmed up the bedroom too, would recomend.

A trick I learned many years ago, still applies today.
It does not involve dangerous, or costly, practices.
It does involve 'forward planning'.
Put simply, it is 'Layering'.
Before the daylight fades, and dinner is served, undress, wash, put on a thermal base layer, then outer clothing.
Hot food, hot drink, then after dinner walk, wearing jacket, hat, gloves etc as top layer.
Nicely warmed up inside and out, ready to retire leaving base layer on.
We're not the only ones employing this method surely?
Each to their own.
Kind regards James
Exactly right add extra layers before you get cold, as soon as the sun starts setting.
We always have to walk the dogs before bed, so warms you up and relaxs too.

definitely agree with hot drink & food & thermals - . we also use
* Blue cat heater to take chill off. we turn it off before falling asleep.
* hot water bottles - 2 each - one in bottom of sleeping bag
* cobb portable bbq with lid on when it's dying down & like a warm oven/radiator, but we keep an eye on it & put back outside the tent before going to sleep.
* mats and blanket under the airbed, blanket over the airbed
