Hi, I've just bought an old Hobby caravan (circa 1986) to use on a permanent site in Spain. I must admit that I know nothing about caravans as I'm a 100% canvas person, but this is another sort of holiday for me!
The van was first sold in Germany, so although I have all the manuals I can't undrstand them! My only problem so far is getting the fridge, an Electrolux RM 301, to work.
From my guess at the instructions the fridge seems to work either on 220v electricity, or by12v electricity or by gas. But I may have this wrong and the electricity is used to control the gas.
I've looked for user manuals on the Internet, but these all seem to be in Dutch, Norwegian, or back to German again!
Could anyone give me the briefest instruction abouyt how the frige should work, and I can start to sort it out? I'm have 220v hook-up, so that's what I'd be useing.
It should work on either gas or electric seperately , the electric doesnt control the gas,
the 12 volt should only be used while towing if you have twin elecrtrics on the towbar.
Set the switch to electric if you are on mains hookup.
the electricity symbol will be either a plug or a lightening flash.
the gas symbol is a flame ,
the 12 volt symbol is a battery .
Select the electric symbol, set the temperature control, and thats it.
Set the battery switch to the off position when not towing or it will drain the batery.
When using fridge on gas , set switch to gas, press and hold the gas knob in, and press the ignitor button repeatedly until the flame lights, hold for a further 20-30 seconds .
there is a viewing window inside the fridge down at the bottom where you can see if the flame is lit.
Many thanks for this advice. In fact I managed to work it out more by luck than judegment - I set the thermostat to maximum and later touched the inside element of the ice box - ouch! What got me was the quiet running of the motor!
I'm not sure if we'll ever have cuase to use the gas but you never know, we're enjoying the van so much that who knows, one day we may just put her on the road . . .
Cliff, no joy on the search but worth knowing about. There was nothing at all in English but hundreds of manuals in German, none of them for my fridge. I had the bright idea of using a free on-line translator, www.tradukka.com/, (one of the best I know - and that's saying something as translating is part of my job!) to work back to English, cuttin and pasting from the .pdf file. Oh well, so much for bright ideas!
Dave, I think you get today's Plain English Award, albeit vicariously on behalf of the Wikipedia contribitor. What a brilliant explanation for someone like me, whose 'O' level science grades (circa 1973!) had to be seen to be believed (so too for my dad's apoplectic reaction to them!).
I always wondered how gas fridges work, and now I know! I also now know why I didn't hear the compressor running, see above!
So, to Debbie, Cliff, Dave and anyone else for that matter, should you be touring in the Catalan Pyrenees pop in to Camping Collegats for a cuppa - just ask at reception for Simón!
