also, I need to put a strong roofrack (for roofbox and canoe) on that doesnt rest on the paintwork (like the Thule one does alas) but cant seem to get a definitive answer if a van rack/bars set will fit

I have a 57 reg Berlingo 1.6 petrol. My roof bars are Thule and on top of that I often have a roof box. I tow a Raclet Jasmine trailer tent with the car and just recently drove from Oxford to Edinburgh for a camping holiday. The car performed very well on the journeys each way.

Some models of the Berlingo have fitted roof bars so there is no contact with the roof.

Love the berlingo! And it came with the roof bars

Another handy thing is you get an allen key and the roof bars swing to the horizontal position if you want them that way round (it's a diesel 1.6hdi 08 plate)

Plenty of clearance from the roof.  I also got the roof bars to fit the rails, really strong grip on them

loads of lovely campy room!

even get a free trolley in the boot..

We have one, and much to my surprise I really like it. Ours is an 03 plate 2.0HDi. I'd recommend a Forte edition as this seems to come with the Modutop - storage lockers overhead which are useful for bits & pieces. We keep the kids' DS consoles, all the associated chargers, cameras etc in them.

Just a word of warning - the roofbars don't always fit roofboxes as they are quite far apart. Fortunately you can just fit a Halfords 340 roofbox in the boot without putting the seats down...

This wasn't an option as the roofbox is too short & I didn't think to measure it before we went to collect it... Thankfully & by coincidence, the roofbars from our Picasso also fitted so it worked out OK in the end.

Ahhh this thread has made me feel very nostalgic for my beautiful red diesel berlingo - It was an original model on a T plate and I got it when there were very few on the road- everyone laughed at me until they had a ride in it - the space was vast and we moved all manner of things with it. I have no hesitation in recommending this car to anyone who needs room and good value for money excellent for a camping car.  I truely believe I will never have so much affection for a car ever again. I sold it as my husband got a company car and we chose a Citroen C4 grand picasso. This car is also very good but somehow not the same:(

My berlingo had a full length electric sunroof so we never used a roof rack or box but with the vast boot space we always fitted things in. The tail gate is a very handy  rain shelter when raised.

Excellent camping car, I had the old shape 1.9diesel also red, I've got the new shape now with 110bhp diesel so vast improvement in performance. Better fuel consumption & cheaper tax as well.
