so we've bought a new motor that has a towbar with it (a detachable one) which means we can switch from the roof rack to a towbar rack. Anyone have the Thule 3 bike towbar rack - is it any good, any tips or recommendations with using it?
I have the old model Thule EuroClassic 902 that takes two bikes, although I have the third bike, extention kit should the need arise.
What I like about the 902, is that it folds down, and can be stored in the car's boot when not in use, I don't think the new Thule bike racks can do this.
The Tow Ball fitting is very secure, and I have had 50kg of bikes on there and it's remained rock solid.
If buying now, I would go for the Westfalia bike rack, as it is very much like the old 902, and has a better Towball clamp system.
I have had the Thule 903 for about 5 years now and recommend it.
Used it for two bikes and a high chair when youngest son was toddling, now take 3 bikes no problem.
Hooks on and off easily, and fits in boot or roofbox when camping.
Only quibble is that the electric plug takes a bit of fiddling to get all lights working properly.
ooh I'm liking that Westfalia! but far too pricey for me I'm afraid. The Thule is coming in at about £125 on Amazon new although I'm also looking at a couple of second hand ones too. good to hear it folds down well too.
The one you are looking at is the 'cheap' Thule Rideon bike rack, which is not to be confused with the much more expensive(£300odd)Thule EuroClassic rack which is comparable to the Westfalia.
I have the Thule 3 bike carrier. Got it 2nd hand off eBay for about £80.Very solidly built. Watch the nose weight limit on your tow bar though. Weigh your bikes as mine is limited to 50Kg & 3 adult bikes would be easily over that with the weight of the rack. Great piece of kit.
Good advice steve, as I added the Thule 900 BackUp Box to my EuroClassic 902, and when fully loaded, it was very close to the 75kg Nose Weight limit of my VW Golf.
I have since sold the BackUp Box to some one on here with a more suitable vehicle.
Pity realy as it was a real neat solution, far better than using a RoofBox.
But all that weight on the back end of the car, did effect handling a little. especialy when the rest of the car was also stuffed with kit.
