Hi, We are taking a relative camping and due to their health issues I'm considering getting them a protable toilet for use in the night. I've never used one my self and any advice or review's would be very gratefully received. What are they like for number 2's etc.
The chemicals appear expensive but will last a considerable time. Toilet paper use supermarkets own brand these breakdown better than the quilted expensive type. Toilet wipes should not go in the unit as they will not break down.
That's about it, contents go in, and then you trot off to the CDP in the morning for a chat with your fellow campers to empty it.
------------- Yesterday is already a dream and tomorrow is only a vision, but today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope.
I used a Thetford Porta Potti 165 for first time last year. It is about height of a standard toilet which is good if person is arthritic as some are quite low. Very good and stable, easy to flush down and empty - even I managed it on my own. Does take a bit of space in my car, but worth it.

We have a little collection of portaloos which we use as our only loo on non facility sites, the last two came from the local car boot sale for about £18 each IIRC - one of them is brand new in its box so it's worth checking around before buying new if money is an issue. I think ours are all Thetford 365's which is possibly an older model but it's also normal toilet height rather than being low.
I like Thetfords as you can replace pretty well all of the working parts on them very easily - even on the older models.
I love our Fiamma Bi Pot - very easy to fill, empty and clean and very stable.
We use ours for everything and have never had a problem with smells or leaks. Put pink fluid in the top flush tank and blue or green fluid in the bottom waste tank which are available from any good camping or caravan store.
I've just bought the fiamma bi pot 1520 formerly the 39 (which i believe is the highest seating position) from www.leisureshopdirect.com priced at £34.99 Plus postage absolute bargain! I'm Very pleased with it.
Worth every penny you spend. Hang on for a week or two if you can as Lidl should have them in soon, cost about £25 - £30. They are not the tallest on the market but you can sit it on something.
As long as you use follow the chemical dosing instructions you should have no problems and more importantly no whiffs!
We have the smallest Thetford one and a Fiamma bi pot and the latter is by far the easiest to fill, empty and clean and is also a better height than our little Thetford
