Hi i am looking for some sleeping bags and have narrowed it down to the Vango nitestar 450SG or the Vango sonno Grande.
My kids use the Nitestar and i know its warm but i like the sound of the Sonno Grande as its wider. I find the ratings confusing and its not as easy as comparing the numbers, they seem to have changed the format also one gives a tog rating and the other doesn't??
look for the fill weight - 250/350/450. 250 is too cold for this country even in summer, 450 will be heavy and bulky but nice and warm. Get a fluffy fleece blanket and tuck it around, you can throw it off if too warm. the thing to remember is that sleeping bags keep the warmth in so if you go to bed cold you will probably stay cold.
The fill weight is the weight of the filling used in grams per square metre so the larger the number the heavier the filling the warmer the bag should be but this does depend a bit on the quality of the filling.
Another consideration is the number of layers of filling in so much that 2 thin layers are better/warmer than 1 thick layer.
As an example the figures for the sonno you give above would indicate the top of the bag has 3 layers of filling 2 at 125 gsm + 1 at 200 gsm = top total 450 gsm of filling
The Vango nitestars have a pretty good reputation

Everything has been said before, but since nobody ever listens we have to keep going back and saying it all over again and again and again
Cheers that makes sense, sorry for being dense but can't stand being cold and we are going away at the start of June so want to get sleeping bags soon.
Hi Wendy - know what you mean about being cold - it's no fun. We used our duvet with blanket at easter and it wasn't warm enough so have just bought two Outwell Camper Lux sleeping bags. Had called in our local Yeomans and saw them, discussed with OH, and got a small discount, as I had found them cheaper on the internet. Tested them at home - not quite the great outdoors but am hoping they will be much warmer and I won't need pj's plus fleece plus thick shack socks when we go in June. They are cotton feel so not slippy either. I have high hopes!
we have the nightstar and i would reommend them. been away twice reently and we were not cold infact we were too warm. friends we went with were freezing and they have just gone to get some. i know what you mean about the size of them but being warm is more important.
