Try it - if it does not extend over the cannister area and neither does the flame you should be fine. Camping frying pans tend to be smaller than domestic ones. We use a wok on ours at home when we cook in the garden - the shape means that the flame is directed up the sides rather than out towards the cannister. The cannister area stays cool, but we tested it first.

We use a 10in frying pan on ours' and although I suppose it does extend over the line of the cannister area a little,I haven't found a way of making the flame lick that wide or been able to get the pan hot enough to radiate enough heat to effect the cannister housing..
..but I suppose it depends on how big a pan you intend to use...
I have also got a small piece of heat resistant fibreboard(looks bit like asbestos),which I sometimes sit over the cannister housing..
There have been posts before about this and other genuine problems. Most of this design have a warning saying that the base of the pot or pan must not be bigger than the circle formed by the pot rest. (not sure of the exact wording.) The heat can't spread upwards and away from the area of the gas canister. If it did go bang, well enough said. If the pan is a bit too big, just use it off centre. Better safe than sorry.
I'm normally one of the posters that says it will be ok regarding various scare post and warnings, but on this one I'm with the don't do it brigade

Yes, there have been some nasty reports on the forum of the cannisters exploding (and both adults and children having to go to hospital due to flying debris) due to overheating after the use of over-sized pots. Some of these reports have been attached to cheaper/less well known brands of the stoves though, not the Campingaz one. But the risk is easily avoided.

My wife has decided she'd rather a stove where the gas was further away from the stove so we're probably going to get the Campingaz camping chef stove.
I've put another post asking what exactly I need to get that up and running! Thanks
I have in the past when using the gaz canister (the heavy steel version) on my small sailing cruiser in the winter, actually stood the canister on the very low cooker flame, to bring the temperature up inside the can to get a better flame going.
