I have a strip light which casts a very nice light in our tent. At the moment it has to run off a leisure battery via crocodile clips. This also means that I have to take a big battery and the charger, which is all space, for it when we go away.
How can I run this light directly off the mains/EHU?

Hi,

not really practical to try.your lamp will be 12 volts dc the mains is 230 volts ac.You would have to have a transformer to step the voltage from 12 volts to 240 and a rectifier to convert it to ac.coupled with the fact you would have to change the tube for a 230v model......all probably expensive and again all stuff to lug around.better off buying a mains model

Why dont you rig up a cable with a plug at one end and a socket and bulb the other. this can go in your EHU, or am I missing something?

Thanks for the replies so far. We bought an Outwell Tauri light and so far in one week we are on the 3rd bulb plus the strip light gives a far superior light which is why I was hoping it would be easy to convert it to run off the EHU.

You can buy 12v power supplies that plug into the mains for use with 12v coolboxes. These can also be used for other 12v appliances. So, you could remove the crocodile clips from your striplight and fit a cigarette lighter plug (ensuring the polarity is the right way round) and then plug it into one of these. For example:

Thanks for replies.

I have cut the crocodile clips off the strip light and soldered the wires from the light to a cigar lighter plug. I have also bought a convertor from Maplins for about £10. I now have a working strip light which works of the mains.
