The advantage for me at least with those moulded two handled buckets is that they are so hard to damage even when full of stuff and packed at the bottom of the boot with half a tonne of camping kit wedged down on them. 'Ordinary' buckets can so easily split.
I know exactly what you mean and bought mine at Chelston Motorhomes, Wellington, Somerset. However, it disappeared recently on a very windy site and I went to Chelston hoping to replace it and they don't have them anymore. I must say though that one of the handles did break under the weight but my husband made a lovely repair and I was very fond of my big red bowl!
Yes we use the folding crates too. Though I do also have a small square washing up bowl that we use for draining into or carrying stuff if there isn't much. I also have a folding Trek Mates one too for when we are going really light. It was expensive but is well made and 100% better than the folding round ones.
I use the outwell collapsible bowl. Whenever I'm boiling the kettle I top it up with spare boiling water and cover it with the Outwell chopping board to keep the water warm. Collapses nicely is big enough and it's great to just wash up as you go along rather than trek with a big quantity to the washing up area and queue.

We use the collapsible crate and a square washing up bowl. The washing up bowl sits in the crate, all the washing up goes in the washing up bowl. Washing up liquid etc is at the side of the washing up bowl in the crate.
Works a treat and it's all neat and compact and easy to carry.
Towsure have the bowls in the store.
Aldi had mop buckets in so i had two, just chuck all my washing up in them.The other one stacks in side the other to carry the camping lights.
