You can buy huge sheets of damp proof membrane from builders merchants for not much money. Good this about making footprint from these is that it's tough and provide some protection from sharp objects. It also doesn't blow and flap around when you are tying to pitch in the wind.
I don't use a groudsheet/tarp but i think i will get a cheap tarp for next season even though i now have a ZIG which is fantastic when muddy, just turn the thing over and fold it with the mud inside and hose it off when we get home.Folding a muddy SIG without getting it all over the tent fabric was a royal pain and then trying to clean the thing was even worse.
Regarding size as long as it isn't bigger and sits under your living area i won't be to fussed,6x4 is what i need but a 5x4 would be good enough for me as long as you left the spare 1m uncovered at the bedroom end as that won't get boggy like your living area does.
£50 for a monty 6 footprint and that is short for my lake and yet you can still buy a monty 12 footprint for £25 though thats 85cm's longer than i need,i'd certainly get the scissors out to save £25 lol.Less than £10 for a tarp sounds even better.\o/
We have recently bought an Outwell Nevada M and we are considering a footprint, so I have been reading these posts with interest.
I can get tarps very cheap on the market - every size you could wish for, but I think I will stump up the £30 odd and also get a couple of the cheap tarps. I intend to use the original as a template to make others from - it will average the price out a bit!

Sue, you really don't need to buy the Outwell one to use as a template. All you need to do is know the dimensions of your tent and use a tape measure to measure and cut what you need. That'll make the bill even lower. I wouldn't dream of chucking big money at a supplier for something like a footprint. I'd rather spend the money on half a tank of petrol to get me to a campsite and back!
The footprint for our tent was around £70 so we made our own using the £5.99 tarp from Argos.
Put up the tent and laid the tarp down and up the sides by a couple of inches, then cut it. Probably not necessary but we taped over the edges and folded the corners to create a bathtub type groundsheet which fits our tent perfectly and saves those nasty cold draughts from coming under the sides.
If we want a bit of luxury we get the £3.99 Home & Bargain picnic rug from the car and pop that down in the seating area so its something nice to put your feet on.
