We have a lab too, and we got a Dyson DC26 city vacum.  It is only 5kg, and we leave it in the van all the time. 

Cheapest place we found them from was Amazon.  Not the cheapest of hoovers, but picks up the dog hair brilliantly, it's very light and very compact

I got a small cyclone vacuum from pound stretcher - reduced to £20 (from £25 )  Great suck, although the pipes are plastic and a little flimsy.  We got two Jack Russells who lose hair all the time.  It picked loads up. 

We take over our caravan tomorrow, and will leave it in there.
