Right peeps need some advice .............

I put up the tent yesterday as we are off on holibobs on Monday and there are a few spots of mildew on the windows and a couple on the pannels around the windows.

We dried out the tent after we packed up last year so the only thing me we can think of is that we had a flood at Christmas and it "got" the tent :-(

I'm off up GO OUTDOORS when I finish work to see if we can buy a cleaner for it

But what I need to know is would it be ok to clean the tent while were on holiday, its the only time we can pitch the tent for a long period of time? So i figure give it a good clean and treat the mildew, and it will have plenty of time to dry out!

We have a Caplan 5 if that makes any difference?!?!?

Thanks

Laura

Hi Laura--this can be a long winded thing to do.  In general wash the canves/material with a reputable cleaner from the campshop--then leave to dry but you must re-proof the material.  Fabsil is one of the best but there are others.  cover up any windows and do not put the re-proofer on them.  allow to dry.  When you come to pack up after use, ALWAYS......dry any skirts that have been in contact with the floor, if it is windy let the tent have a blow to get rid of any moisture from sleeping. yes you can do it whilst you are away--there shouldnt be a problem there but just check weather for a good day. cheers and have a nice holiday. gary

Thanks Gary, never had this problem before so was going at it a bit blind, and to be honest the guys at GfO Outdoors aren't always the most knowledgeable :-(

I shalll look for some Fabsil and get cracking on it next Monday

Thanks :-)

The plastic windows can just be washed off with a damp cloth. If there are just a few mildew spots on the side panels next to the windows then a mild solution of Milton baby bottle steriliser should get those off and you shouldn't really need to reproof unless you scrub the hell out of it. Alternatively, if they are not too bad just leave them and a few boiling hot sunny days will soon bleach them off.

I wouldnt have thought you needed to reproff as its a polyester tent. As bob said if its only a small patch exposing it to sunlight will kill it and it can then be brushed off. The windows could have been a bit damp when you put it away. DONT use any detergent, washing up liquid or household cleaners on the tent fabric
