I've been looking at the Exped 10cm videos on youtube. They look like a really great product but I couldn't help but notice that at the rate he was deflating the mat a lot of air was escaping really quickly. We have a double vango adventure 3cm for my son and whilst it's pretty good I think two adult bodies perhaps need something with a bit more padding. I don't however want to buy a regular thickness SIM with added airbed if you get my drift! So do you get significantly more foam in a thicker mat or is there just room for more air?

There must be more foam, or the pack sizes would all be very similar, surely?

My daughters Alpkit Dozer has holes through the foam at the foot end to reduce pack size. We used to use Thermarest Base Camps when we were tent camping, which are 5cm thick, but last time we went I used the 7.5cm Dozer. In my experience thicker is more comfortable!

Thicker foam as its the foam that absorbs the air

I too am looking to move from air bed to SIMs but saw a 10cm mat while camping in the Netherlands this April, can't really find any 10cm ones here yet??

Anyone seen any for sale anywhere?

Blacks have got a sale on at the moment for SIMs, 25mm thick ones are #12.99 while 7.5cm ones are just 50 quid.

thought you all might like to know

P.S. I don't work for them!

Since I posted this a few weeks ago I've got 4 SIMs for the family. Initially I was just buying a double 3cm Vango SIM for my son so that he wouldn't slide off in his room. When I gave it a go folded in two I found it to be quite comfy. The double thickness at 6cm is pretty good. They were on offer at Simply Hike for £15 which is a staggeringly good price. I've ordered 2 more for me and my OH and then another one for my youngest daughter to use - we have 3 (folded twin) SIMs side by side covered with a king size duvet. It's a lot of packing but very necessary for night time comfort!

they definitely exist over here though. There was a seller on Ebay for a while with some for around £30 for Gelert Adventures which was quite good. We picked a relative bargain where some online shop sold off Gelert Expeditions at under £27 each so picked up a couple a while back. Wouldn't swap back to airbeds at all now, the difference is phenomenal personally.Gelert 10cm SIMs
