We have bought all our camping gear including a Campingaz double burner and grill, and have decided to use Calor gas as most camping will be in the UK. We don't however know which size bottle to get. There will be four of us and we plan to cook breakfast and most evening meals. We won't use gas for drinks or heating etc, just the burner/grill. We initially thought the 7kg bottle would be best to make sure we had plenty, but are now thinking this may be too big. Which would you go for?
I went for a 3.9kg propane after reading around the forums, I'm hoping that will get my family of 4 through a couple of seasons, we camp about 5-6 times a year.
My decision was mainly based on a tiny car (Clio!) and the fact that it's not far to go to get it filled.
I think you'll be fine with a 3.9kg bottle of propane. They are cheap and are small but actually last a long time due to the burner not actually consuming much gas at all.
If you didn't it already realise it,it's worth looking out at your local tip,car boot sale, freecyle etc for a Calor cylinder..and then just taking it to your local stockist and exchanging for a full one..this will save you the initial deposit for the cylinder(..I think around £30+ ,excluding the gas)
..as you don't need to be in possession of any documentation/agreement in order to get a refill...
I hadn't realised this when we got our first cylinders....so ended up paying two loads of deposits!?
Thanks for the advice. I have found a local gas supplier who delivers for free and waivers the cylinder hire charge! They are also the cheapest suppliers for refills too.
