When my reversing sensers worked many years ago they only 'picked up' the socket not the tow ball. Solution by Ford was to bend socket bracket so socket is further under the car!
Dont know whether plug would disable the sensors on my focus - didnt even think of it, however since switch was fitted virtually \i dont always remove tow itch,its worth having.
ive just had one fitted to my bmw 3 series and it does affect sensors so i opted for one called the a1 as we only use it 2-3 times a year the whole swan neck removes in about 3 mins flat by rmoving two bolts,and hey presto working revesing sensors again,its a much cheaper alternative to a detachable one and doesn take long to remove even so this was about 240 fittedwith single plug,a detachable one was about another 100
