I am planning to be in my caravan a lot during the winter months (Mid Nov to end feb) and am wondering who may have a suitable generator I could borrow/loan - without breaking the bank (HSS charge 50£ per week on longterm loan which is out of the question - I can afford say 10£ per week?
Maybe you could buy one from somewhere like ebay and then sell it when you no longer need it. The chances are you may even get your money back that you paid for it

You can pick up a used generator for about £300 on eBay if you look hard enough which should offset the hire costs - you can also hire it out to people if you like!
3 kw is a big genny , i used to use a yamaha 750 watt silent suitcase model , and that was enough for everything apart from a hairdryer , heating , hot water and fridge all ran on gas , having sold my m/h with the genny , i have since bought a honda 650 silent suitcase one off ebay for 142 pounds ,, the other problem with a big genny is that it runs too noisy , you will soon upset your neighbours , and will cost a lot more to run, check how much output you actually need ,,
Don't get one of the cheap generators that produce a very erratic output and certainly not a decent sine wave. You would be looking at about £1000 for a decent Honda 2.6kW inverter type. The cheap ones will probably damage any items with electronics in them (most things these days) and they are so noisy you would need to wear ear defenders.

I know it is costly £50 a week to hire one but in that hiring price insurance is included so if it breaks it is covered.
If you borrowed one from someone off here say and it broke you would probably end up having to shell out for a replacement or at very least getting it repaired which could mount to alot depending on the problem.
If you are going to be using it long term it may as well be more wise to purchase one as other posters have said.
Check out your Yellow pages there may be someone hiring at cheaper rates than HSS, check the buy and sell papers too!

How about staying on sites with EHU? And if staying in the caravan at someone's house, use an extension lead.
