What ever extinguisher you decide to use, be aware of the following.

The small car extinquishers that you can buy may give you a false sense of security. Has anybody tried to use one? two or three seconds after you've pulled the trigger, and it's empty. If you haven't made other provisions and the fire is still burning what do you do then?

If you get a decent sized extinquisher,  say a 6kg Co2, sure it'll put out most small fires but be careful how you use it. I've seen burning materials blasted from a waste bin, only to end up all over a loading bay potentialy spreading the fire.

The other thing to remember when using Co2's with a horn is, DONT hold the horn. The Co2 is so cold when it's released that your hand will stick to it.

As said by others before me. A bucket of water and a fire blanket is the way to go and just keep the Co2 for electrical fires.

Ps Powder extinguishers go everywhere and will ruin everything in your van

Lidl have a 6kg (DRY POWDER) Fire extinguisher for £12.99 quite heavy for a van but more usefull than those little nes that give a little squirt and thats it.  For comparison its about half the size of a normal extinguisher that you get in offices and shops...

Some observations.

For cars and caravans 2Kgs of powder is the minimum you need. 1kg extinguishers is sold, but are not really enough.

Most Halon types now also are not allowed anymore for environmental reason, just like the old BCF ones: atmospheric break down gasses. Their effectivenss is terrific. 2kgs of BCF or Halon has the same effect as 5 hgs of powder or as 7 to 9 kgs of CO2 snow.
Someone above said that it may also kill oneself due to expulsion of oxygen: in theory that is true. During firefighting training the fire brigade tells you straight away that this is the official theory, but that in practice the fire is extinguished before that lack of oxygen is reached and that moreover also the fire uses oxygen plus that the Carbon Monoxide is worse. The little time needed to smother the fire with halon and thus save on carbonmonoxide normalyy balance in favour of using Halon/FFgass extinguishers.

In caravans powder will works well, but it will be a white mess afterwards. It gets in between everything and will ruin laptops and such (it gets in between the contacts and corrodes, powders are salts). On the other hand it covers the fire well and does its work. You may inhale it, no problem, although it will be handy to have a toilet nearby afterwards as 'throughput' will be improved.

Gasseous extinguishers like Halon are very good for engine fires. One can blow it with effect through the car radiator, which is impossible with powder. For powder one has to lift the hood.

The 'light water' extinguishers also are very good but probably still very expensive, probably not available for the private market. Excellent for petrol fires. It covers the pool of petrol and sticks to it, recovering it if blown away by wind or removed by e/g/ a stick, thus making re-ignition impossible. For a long time they were to expensive for petrol stations, but now i see them more and more often at these stations.

Foam is in practice allowed for electricity. The water content is that small that it does not really conduct.

I still have a 2 kgs Halon extinguisher for the car (can be 'self tested') and a 2 kgs powder extinguisher for the caravan. Probably will fit a fire blanket next to the extinguisher in the door opening of the caravan. Handy for cooking fires.
