Hi Guys,

Just bought myself a 4 x 3 trailer (second hand) for camping use. When I went to collect it, the guy look horrified at me as I applied a smear of grease on to my towing hitch, and proceeded to give me a (friendly) lecture about not using grease on my hitch, it should be bone dry.

During my brief caravaning days I always gresed my hitch, and also when previously owned a trailer.

My question is, who is correct?

Also, what sort of tyre pressures should I be running the trailer at fully loaded with tent and other gear etc? the tyre size is 4.80 / 4.00

Cheers

Lee

Watching this thread with interest as I don't have a clue. I personally don't use any grease and so far not had a problem.

Yes add grease every time, I forgot last time I hitched up and half way home evey time I turned left or right my trailer groaned at me. Which was new as in the past unless you  looked in the mirror you never knew it was there.

I think if you had a caravan with friction pads in the hitch you would have to keep the ball grease free.

So before you clunk click, dot a dollop of grease on you ball

Always grease the towball unless you are using an Alko friction pad type hitch. Then the ball and hitch needs to be completely clean and grease free.

Any type of general purpose grease will do because it is not used 24/7 and you will be able to see when it needs more attention.

When not towing always cover the towball with a cap to prevent muck getting into the grease.

Oh and the cap also prevents the neat transfer of grease onto troasers and legs.

Always have greasy balls now , ever since it sang to me all the way home from Wales. Halfords do a tube of good thick grease for a few quid, but like the man said get your cover on the ball as soon as you unhitch or it will rub onto everything near!
