Been out today collecting a Handirack & Handihodall I won on Ebay, got them both for £62 which I thought was a good price, seeing they are £120 to £130 for both on most web site's.Well could'nt wait to see how much I could fit in it .
1 royal easy up kitchen,2 camp bed's,2camping chair,s,1 aluminum table,1 small table,2 kampa closet's,,2 roll mat's 2 picnic blanket's,2 sleeping bag's,2 blanket's,2 quision's and last but not least 2 blow up chair's.
Max weight is 50kg,all my equipment weigh's 44kg I'm made up with it and would recommend it.
We use a Handiholdall with the built-in rack on our trailer tent. We used to use it on the car roof with 'normal' roof bars. We couldn't use the Handirack as the car had side curtain airbags.
It's a great bit of kit but you need to bear in mind that it isn't totally waterproof. You can get rain through the zip if it's really chucking it down. I keep a roll of large black bin bags in it just in case. Make sure the two zip pullers are at the back of the bag when closed.
Regarding the weight, when calculating the full weight on the roof of the car, don't forget to include the 4kg of the Handiholdall and 2.5kg of the Handirack.
We used ours on a maiden voyage when it was weeing it down, items near the zip got a bit wet. We have a Honda Jazz, and water was leaking through into the car from the rack. Having said that though, we'll still be using it though with the following conditions:
1. Only when it's not forecast as torrential for the day (forecast was constant rain and blizzards...and it was right)! Hmm common sense?! (no need for sarky replies, we were testing the kit!)
2. Only when a journey is within an hour or two of home. This covers 99% of our camping so fine there.
3. We may purchase roof bars as part of next years camping kit, but there's still a whole year of camping to do!
I was realy impressed with how much (light) kit we fit in it, and it means the eldest child isn't squashed into the car. Quick to put up and down. We also bought a padlock for the zips.
We have the duffels too, they are now packed in the camping cupboard, next time just heave them onto the roof and off we go!
2. Only when a journey is within an hour or two of home. This covers 99% of our camping so fine there.
Is this because of the weather or is there another reason you wouldn't travel too far with it-if you don't mind me asking. Looking at getting one. ^Thanks
I have the handirack with a cheap roof bag, our maiden voyage was at easter and it was raining at home (although destination was dry) I was probably a bit naughty as one of the 'bars' had a puncture/leak and didn't stay inflated. I drove on a local road for the first 15 miles at 50mph before stopping to check all was ok then continued on the A14 at just under 70 mph for the remaining 60 miles. On the way home we loaded up (mainly bulky soft furnishings to keep weight down) took a wrong turning which made our homeward journey over 100 miles and didn't stop to check it once!
The instructions do warn that if its raining water may wick into the car depending on vehicle but we had no problems.
Used ours last year for 2 week hol in Norfolk. Amazed at how much fitted in. Really liked the fact that once we were set up on site, simply deflated rack and folded the bag away until it was time to come home.
No problems with rain although only passed through showers. As others have said, packed items that may be susceptible to water damage in plastic bags.
------------- You have to be cruel to be unkind.
Kinky is using using a feather; wierd is using a whole damn chicken!
Do the straps inside cause any bother to the driver? I was thinking about getting just the Handirack so we can put our Quechua tents (round flatish bags - 85cm diameter - when packed) on the roof. Would it matter if I put both straps through the rear doors (Skoda Fabia) as I notice their website says you use on a 2-door car?
Thanks in advance!
------------- "Yeah, I'll go camping as long as we have an Aerobed!"
2013
Planning to go to Holland for 2 weeks camping in August BUT the planning is giving me a headache!
Have to say I got a handi rack, and don't like it. Tried it once to transport my kayak and the thing moved about while driving, also rain water soaked in through the straps and dripped into the car.
Ignore all the above, I think they are brill, is anyone interested in buying a Handirack, only used once, perfect condition still boxed. £30 ono plus postage or pick up free from Sheffield area.
------------- As I've told my psychiatrist, you can't have too many tents.
