So.......
How safe is it to use a Coleman lantern, or other fuel burning lantern in a tent? We have a dual fuel lantern, two mantle version, and although it's not left on overnight, we do use for longish periods in the evenings. Having said that, it's a canvas tent and I'm often popping out for a cig, or the loo, or the dogs need to go out, and the zips don't make an airtight seal, and the windows on the Touareg only zip down one side not along the bottom, or the bell has vents at the top. I can see that all these things ventilate the tent, but is that enough?
We used that lantern in our canvas frame tent without any issues. You would most likely have issues in a tent fitted with a SIG or ZIG - possibly insufficient ventilation to disperse the fumes produced.
Yes sig and zig more risky, but if you extinguish completely then nothing is burning overnight,no fumes are accumulating in your tent, the problem is more with "smouldering" as in bbqs...why anyone would take a bbq into a tent is beyond me,but it unfortunately happens.Chimneys were invented in houses for a reason. We have parrafin lamps in our tents, but we don't have sigs or zigs either and make sure they are well and truely out at night.

and lots more besides
That's great, thank you folks, I love the lantern, it is always out at night and we use a cheap Lidl movement sensitive one for midnight trips, but the Coleman gives heat too and is bright enough to read/knit etc with. Don't use any other types of burning stuff in tent, unless it is really chucking it down and I have a small single burner stove for the odd cuppa, but that's only on for a few minutes. Also I generally can't stand the smell of BBQ's, don't use one camping, would never, ever think of bringing one in anywhere, after all, aren't they meant to be for cooking on outside, and by men???
