We have 2 rechargeable lanterns and have loved them for few years, but, having changed the tubes cannot get good light like I used to. Just wondering whether to buy more tubes or renew lanterns. Any recommendations please. We dont have EHU
The tube lights I have had often feel a bit "clinical" - too much like an office to feel cosy in a tent, even if they are a good light to read by or play cards etc.
If you want a good battery light, Niclisem's advice is for what I think is the best battery light on the market. The links show the Ring Cybalite, which is identical to the Maplin version, on sale for £14.99 at the mo. Maplin LED lantern
Again, a bit too cold on the colour spectrum, so some people don't get on with them.
If you want a liquid fuel light (nice and warm, both in terms of colour spectrum and anout 1kW of heat), then I have found the Coleman twin mantle to be better than the Northstar, even though the Northstar is a lot more expensive. Cheapest I have seen: Coleman Powerhouse
Not had a gas lantern - so sorry, can't comment.
Finally, for ambience and true camping style - can't beat a paraffin hurricane lamp. A nice one that is sturdy won't cost more than a fiver (loads on line, and Go-Outdoors have them too). Add another couple of quid for paraffin / lamp oil, and pretend you are an outdoorsman
it has been pretty good so far and we have used it a couple of times without the need for recharging it (although we only use it for short periods.) Very robust and lights up the whole tent (hi gear gobi 4) Recommended =)
Is the maplin one exactly like the cybalite one for battery performance ?
Was going to buy the cyba lite but if the maplin one is identical( rebadged) then I probably buy it instead
Thanks
Have to say that we have always used a gas lantern but used the Coleman Duo lantern as it was free with camping mag subs this trip and it is excellent, there are two sections which can be taken off the main body and used to light bedrooms or two corners of a table for example. The light you get is from loads of LEDS and you can get a rechargeable battery for it or use large batteries. Although it is bigger to pack I am leaving the gas lamp at home now.
------------- A problem shared is a problem halved
As usual.it comes down to personal choice,we bought camping gaz lamps at a bargain price of £4.50 each earlier in the summer,we also have Tillley paraffin lamps.both give off good light and the bonus of around 1kw in heat when lit.Plus we have various LED and torches for bed room pods and going to the loo at night etc.
Tilley lamps can give off a lot of fumes though if they do not light correctly, also any lamp which burns gas or paraffin should be used only in well ventilated tents,an CO can build up.We have had wind up lanterns in the past but have found they do not work properly after a short period,as thet start to go dim very quickly, even after being fully wound up.
------------- If the moon reflects the suns light, why does it not reflect the suns heat?
Piratez - I think the Maplin one is identical. The cybalite is known by many diffferent names, and this one used to be £30, now £15. Battery performance is exactly the same at 30 hours claimed.
