We bought an Outwell Superior 400LX-R lantern at the beginning of this season and it's been great. Much better than any light we've used so far.
Very good amount of warm light. Can be used on a table or can be hung via a hook which attaches to the base of the light. When hung upside down, you can remove the shade to prevent it casting shadows.
It lights up all of our four man Minnesota tent and most of our Vermont L. Plenty of light for general use and enough to read by as long as you're not sat too far away.
It's battery powered (no mains option) and takes six D type batteries. We have had about eighteen nights (about two hours per night) out of the first set of batteries so far and it's still going strong.
It's not cheap at arounf £50 but still highly recommended.
I have one of these battery powered and still hasn't run down on the original batteries it came with. Used it in the awning last weekend and it was brilliant hanging from the hook in the middle of the awning. Be carful you don't look driectly at it when switching on, you will have light burn on your eyes!
Just about to buy another - it also doubled as a torch for getting back to the campsite in the dark. One isn't quite strong enough to read from, but with two I reckon it will be. A cold light blue light though, but you do get used to it quickly.
Cyba-lite don't seem to do a 400 lumen model yet but upon a quick search found this
You get a good comparison in the size difference between the 2 lanterns (handy if spaces an issue)if not and price not an issue I'd be tempted to buy the Outwell
well built and sturdy, batteries last a long time, my mate has the cyaba lite too they are identical in performance and build.
Small but very bright for it's size 3 x AA is the alpkit bulb £15.00, but sold out at the moment, again other versions of the same lantern are upto £36.00
------------- It's better to ask a silly question than make a silly mistake.
That was a good tip Rivvy, I picked up 2 of the Outwell 400LX-R Lanterns from GO this morning at Stockport, £31.50 each so deffinate bargain, although they did try to add a delivery charge, although I shot them down on that, as the competitor was giving free delivery, and in any case how can the add delivery cost if you are willing to collect from the competitors store.
GO staff really don't like doing the price match less 10% deal, as they have to double check the competitors offer is pukka and in stock, otherwise I guess the member of staff would get it in the neck if the competitors offer is not genuine.
Anyway great looking lanterns, that will replace my 2 rather dim 20 led Aldi lanterns, although to be fair they have served us well for the last 4 years.
And also the Outwell lanterns take the same batteries as what the Aldi ones do, so just as well that I have plenty D cell rechargeables as each lantern takes 6 !.
if you have access to 12v from your vehicle ( i use one of those car-starter/air pump/power box things as its got 2 lighter sockets + a usb outlet on the front )then maybe this would be useful to you, very bright light + very low power consumption as its all led - but the light is very very cold-white, we have ours on the floor shining towards the tent fabric which softens the glare a bit.
I hot footed it to Go this afternoon to pick up 2 x 400LX R following Rivvy's post (thanks!). They too tried to sting me for the postage equivalent, but as the cost of 2 was over £50 delivery would be free from Outdoor Megastore. A bargain at £31.50 each. I also bought a Coleman cook ware set that was £30 in Go, and ended up getting it for £20 - just love it!
Just been giving the Outwell 400LX-R a test in a darkened garage, and I have to say it's impressive for a £31.50 LED Lantern.
I had some Duracell "D" Alkaline batteries in the garage, save waiting for the Nimh batteries to charge up, but I guess it will still be as bright with re-chargeables despite the 1.8v drop when using re-chargeables.
A very neat feature of this Lantern is that you can Dim it varable to a faint Glow, either with the remote or by manual, the remote is cute to with it's own bright led how cool is that.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
