Hi all, we are very new to caravan owning, so it’s all a bit
of a steep learning curve at the moment, but can anyone please offer any advice
on what sort of things people sleep on. It’s just that once the beds have been assembled, using the relevant jigsaw puzzle of
seat cushions and seat backs, do people put anything over them apart from the
obvious sheet or sleeping bags, we would prefer to use a duvet on top but
wanted to try and smooth out some of the joins made by all the cushions
underneath. Your thoughts and advice would be very much appreciated.
we use a quilted mattress topper for 'over' the beds in the camper, we dont like memory foam but theres lots of people who do and use them in the same way.
be sure to shop around and get the best you can afford, a little investment that could last you years if used and stored well
just asked the same question on the caravan forum , at the moment we tried a thick duvet underneath but this didn't help entirely ,some friends lent us a self inflating mattress but i had a violent allergic reaction to that ,going to look at some mattress pads from ikea but got to measure it all up first .
i,m hoping they will store under the seats .let you know
We have two 3" memory foam toppers in there own covers and a stretch jersey sheet all rolled up and fastened with a Velcro strap so at bed time we just roll them out and throw the pillows and duvet on and way to go so comfy.
We have a tent, but use a double sleeping bag under the fitted sheet and then a duvet on top to sleep under, we find this realy soft and adds to the insulation and comfort, keeps us toasty warm.
We've tried just about everything over the years. I suffer with a bad back. In all honesty, the only thing that really worked for me, was using a sim (self inflating matress). Two singles next to each other fit perfectly for the front bed setup. They are light, compact when deflated for travelling and inexpensive.
Now the kids have grown up, I've progressed up to a rear fixed double bed. Heaven!
OH sleeps like a log on our made up bed, I am a much lighter sleeper and also began to find that after a couple of nights I was suffering back pain, sufficient to keep me awake and make for some very early mornings as I just couldn't bear to lie there a moment longer! We have always used the two duvets method - one over and one under.
I got myself a memory foam topper for my side (so its a single, from B&M) and put this under the duvet and it works well for me. Doesn't take up too much room rolled up (think its a 3 inch one) so fits under the seats with the rest of the bedding. Have also used it when we keep beds at two singles instead of making up the double.
------------- Im no cactus expert, but I know a prick when I see one!
Make sure the seat cushions are configured to the best (most comfortable) layout sometimes by shifting them around will relieve pressure points, just a thought! We have a double thick sleeping bag that we sleep in and is really comfortable
We leave our back seating as a fixed bed, used 2 inch memory foam topper and found this very good. I have now taken out the bunk bed which fits above, removed the seat cushions. Fitted a quality proper mattress and put the memory foam on top. The mattress weighs 13kg. The bunk bed assembly and the removed cushions weighed 17kg.
I screwed the seat lats at each end as they sometimes come loose and we don't use the storage under the bed. 4 inch extra bed width by removing the bunk. Much easier to make up fitted sheets than the four cushions. Caravan luxury now!!
Firstly thanks very much everyone for taking the time to reply.
I think we will try the self inflating mattress route first, as we have quite a few of these from our now retired camping stock. then if that fails there is always the sleeping bag underneath, again we now have a surplus, then if all that fails then i might have to put my hand in my pocket and buy a memory foam topper. still good excuse to take the van out to try all your ideas. thanks again all.
have to agree duvalays are very comfortable but expensive. We tried duvet under sleeping bags first and finally splashed out. Really comfortable and so cosy in the cold weather!
