Hi, i have just purchased a coleman northstar lantern i've followed the set up instructions but when i fire it up it works fine for about 10 seconds and then starts giving off a high pitched noise!
What have i done wrong and does anyone know how to sort it out.
Your help will be much appreciated.

Sounds like a seal or washer problem to me - as epa says, a pressure problem. Have a look on here:http://www.spiritburner.com/fusion/index.php & ask on the forum. Someone will help.
I've had one for years and not had the problem you described, did you burn the mantle before you powered it up. I always put a match to a mantle (very gently) and set in on fire, when it has gone out and cooled down a bit I then pump the pressure, open the valve and click the ignitor. there is a bit of a flare up but it very soon settles down and I get the comforting hiss of bright light and warmth. essential on a beach in the middle of the night.
Mine isn't the petrol version its the propane one the problem is being cause by the glass part the noise is the same as when you would rub your finger around the top of a wine glass except now it is being caused by burnt off propane gasses and hot air rubbing on it as it escapes the lantern. I've tried taking the glass part out and repositioning it and the put the cage/handle part back in a different position it works better now but still makes the noise at low settings but not as loud as before.

My dual fuel one does the same on occasion. I never have got to the bottom of why it does it. I just adjust and turn it up or down til the noise stops, then top-up with fuel and pressurise as normal... It's an intermittent problem, and I don't worry about it, until it scares the bejeesus out of me in the middle of the night when it starts wailing
for it to work as it should it needs a pre heat before trying to light it, a tilley lamp preheater for a few pounds of e bay will do the job perfectly.
if the cap was leaking it would not light at all.
dont use un leaded petrol, only use white gas, it burns better ,longer and cleaner.
