I am a newbie to caravaning and I started back end of last year after I bought a 1991 Ellddis Wisp 450ct. Its old but in good nick and will do me at least a couple of years. What I want to know is it has no tv and I want to put one in what do I buy.
It has an old round saucer dish type ariel on the top which looks out of date. So I want a tv I can get freeview or freesat on and good reception with out breaking the bank. Aldi recently had a system in for caravans but tv looked tiny.
Until the digital switch over we used a standard 19 inch freeview tv on a standard external aerial on a pole fitted to our jockey wheel. After switch over we found that the reception was as good on the status aerial so we no longer setup the external aerial. Many caravaners use satellite but we could never be bothered with all the setting up.
I would just get a suitably sized lcd tv as they all come with freeview built in now and have a go with the Status aerial.

would go for the tv with built in free view if you want to use a normal aerial.the status will work but not in hilly areas.ie parts of cumbria.i use a sky dish now and an old sky plus box.

Any TV with a digital tuner should work with the Status aerial. We tend to use satellite as we can pick up regional programmes on that whilst we are away and we also use it in Europe.
The problem with freeview is that you have to tune in depending on what part of the country you are in. However once you have done it you get the usual range of TV and Radio stations.
The problem with freesat is that you have to align the dish, I don't find this too hard. There is not such a good range of chanels however you can pick up your home regional chanel and you can use it if you are abroad.
You do need to retune the TV when you move to a different area but that was often the case with analogue TVs too. The old Status 315 came in for a lot of flack for being useless in the past but since the digital changeover, they work a lot better. I actually get a better reception from the Status 315 on my caravan than I get from the aerial on the roof of my house.
I don't understand why new caravans have a directional aerial on them when the old omnidirectional 315 does the job just as well, is smaller and therefore must be lighter and doesn't require any setting up except for switching the amplifier on.
