Hi guys and girls, I am looking to get a small trailer to carry the excess of camping gear and was wondering what the laws are about taking a trailer over the channel?
I don't mean speed limits, I want to know if the trailer needs to have a manufacturer's plate and do we need to know about anything else?

On the 29th October 2012 new EU legislation comes into force which affects
the building and sale of trailers. This will affect trailers and the
way they are sold into the market place. Trailers first used in the UK prior to 29th October 2012 do not
require vehicle type approval or for the sale of the trailer to be
recorded. Until this date you can continue to sell trailers in the normal
way. Trailers manufactured or imported into the UK prior to 30th July 2012 may
continue to be sold indefinitely in the UK for highway use. From 29th October 2012, conditions detailed in “S.I. 2009 No.717 - Road
Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 2009” will apply.
The information which has to be obtained and kept for a minimum of 10 years
(a legal requirement) by the distributor or retailer supplying the trailer for
first use on the road comprises:
(a) name and address and (if any) company registration number of manufacturer
–(b) the manufacturer's designation (make and model) of the trailer –(c) the month and year when manufacture of the trailer was completed –(d) the vehicle identification (VIN) number -(e) the number of the type approval or individual approval certificate -(f) a copy of any certificate of conformity issued in respect of the trailer –(g) the date of supply
(h) the name and address of the purchaser (extract from Maypole website).

If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, you obviously haven't grasped the gravity of the situation.
You also need to consider your insurance and breakdown recovery. In the event of a mishap some companies will not touch a "home made" type trailer and in the event of a trailer breakdown you need to ensure you are covered.
