I own a bell tent and am considering buying a wood burning stove for it - mainly for heating. I'm just not sure whether or not I really need one....and slightly reluctant to cut a hole in the canvas just in case I decide I don't need one all the time. Any advice would be good!
I have a Frontier stove for my 4m bell tent and it really keeps the tent cosy. Once you get the hang of it it's great for cooking on too. I've been using it through the winter but won't take it now through the warmer months.
If you add an external flap with velcro all round, you can unscrew the flashing kit and close the hole over when you want to camp without the stove.
The only disadvantage I have found is that the inside of my tent is now getting a bit grey with the smoke (particularly noticeable on the mesh vents at the top). Also there are lots of little sooty specks on the outside of the tent.
Space in the tent or space in the car? The Frontier packs down neatly with the flue inside and the legs folded flat. I use it in a 4m tent and it's not in the way but then there are only two of us at most.

When I was looking to buy a few years ago, the Frontier was the best option regarding cost and weight.
HOWEVER
Have a look on ebay under the heading Gypsy Stove. I have bought two from an advertiser whos ebay name is n20rob. They are fantastic stoves, and unlike others, do have rope seals on the door. I have the larger round stove which I got for £102 and the smaller square stove for £104. Sometimes they go for a lot more, but worth watching in case you can get lucky like I did twice and bag a bargain. I am not connected to this seller in any way other than as a very satisfied customer.
I should just add, that these stoves are much heavier than a Frontier stove, but the smaller square one is still easily portable.
Just had a quick look on ebay, and he has the small square version advertised at the moment. Worth a look.

Spent up, not pent up, just had my new tent up.
Space in the tent mostly as there are 4 humans (sometimes more) plus a dog - but tent is 5m. Will look on fleabay too. I think once I have one I won't regret it - especially looking at the weather today!
