We need some new ones but don't want to spend a fortune but we would like some that work and don't dim too fast. Any ideas?
Thanks

Yes, dont consider any "wind up" lights, torches etc.,
In my opion they do not work. And i think that a lot of members would agree.!

You will be lucky if you get a full season out of wind up lanterns, they never seem to last too long for me.Have you considered gas lanterns,as you get the bonus of a small amount of heat as well.

These LED lights are great for hanging around a tent, better than a wind up & have long battery life. Loads of places have them.

Before we moved over to Electric 2 years ago, we used to use 2 wind-up lanterns and a wind-up hand torch. If you wind it up for 10 minutes you get enough light for about 15-20 minutes.

The light given off is sufficient to navigate around the tent (we had our Coleman Cedar Creek) and make a cup-of-tea etc etc. No good for reading under. Also quite noisy when winding up.

In some ways I miss not having electric as some of the quieter, more scenic pitches are away from Electric Hook-up Points.

If you've not got electric hookup, there are several threads that discuss lights on the forums, and none seem to favour wind up lanterns as they just don't last long enough between winds, and the light output is not bright enough. We went with recommendations on this site for this one which seems to be the best price around, and have nothing but praise for it. The batteries last a long time, and it throws light all around (some of the led ones are very one directional leaving the rest of the tent in shadow).

However contrary to other posts, we have a cheap (free gift with an order for something else ) wind up torch which I am really pleased with. It doesn't have a really bright output, but it's good enough to find your way to the toilets at night, and a few turns of the handle seems to last a decent amount of time. Sometimes less bright is better - if the torch is too bright you may upset other campers at night if you accidentally illuminate their tents!

We have some of these Hi-Gear Lanterns we charge them from mains to give a good initial charge and they last a long time.

Good Points
Mains charge or wind up
Enough light for basic use, handy if you need to get up in the night

Bad Points
If using wind up only, you need to wind fast enough to make the light how green. That needs a lot of winding!

Opportunity
Mains charge first ( at home) then top up with a few minutes of winding

The challenge with any wind-up light, you have to wind long and fast enough to be effective. The brighter the light, the bigger the challenge :)
